Under the supervision of the Director of Education and Promotion, Fresh Check Day Interns will bring Fresh Check Day to UNH, working to create an approachable atmosphere that encourages students to talk about about mental health. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. Yet, most college students don't know about the mental health resources that are available to them on campus and in their communities. Because of the anxieties, fears and misunderstandings that surround mental health, students may choose not to access these resources, even if they are aware of them.

Fresh Check Day helps to build a bridge between students and mental health resources and programs that exist on campus, in the community, and on a national level. Using a peer-to-peer messaging model, Fresh Check Day utilizes student groups, in addition to university staff, to develop and execute interactive booths that deliver mental health resources and information in a fun and engaging way. The program's primary goals are to:

  • Increase awareness of mental health resources and services available to students
  • Reduce stigma and misconceptions about mental health and suicide that often deter individuals from seeking help
  • Empower peers to be gatekeepers by understanding warning signs and knowing what to do if a friend is exhibiting signs of suicide or a mental health concern
  • Increase willingness to ask for help if experiencing emotional distress

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular contact with the national Fresh Check organization
  • Communicate with various student organizations and groups on campus to gain their involvement in the event
  • Recruit, oversee, and manage the planning committee and its tasks/responsibilities (i.e., marketing, fundraising/donations, food and entertainment)
  • Promote mental health awareness during the event and throughout the year
  • Complete peer education training during the fall semester with other Health & Wellness interns and peer educators

Qualifications

  • Passion for mental health and a desire to change the current outlook about mental health
  • Ability to manage time and work independently

  • Strong leadership, organization, and coordination skills
  • Desire to have fun
